Konference "Navigating in chaos"TemaAt this conference we focus on the individual's ability to navigate through life in a society that is hyper complex. How does one cope with everyday problems in professional as well as in private life? Which competencies are required from an individual trying to focus in a poly optic society? How do we facilitate students' learning processes in a way that will assure that they achieve these necessary competencies? Candidates from Higher Education will be (and learners in Further Education are in essence) Life long Learners in what is today characterized as a learning society. Our understanding of learning processes has implications for the choice of pedagogical methods applied in educating candidates and lifelong learners as a whole. When viewing learning as a process of construction in which learners question knowledge acquired earlier, opposing it with information that may shed light upon a topic and contribute to a new understanding of the topic, information is seen as a means of bridging a gap between existing knowledge and a problem to be solved. In this process of construction learners actively take part in their learning processes and aims. Reflection is at the core in the learning process, and it is the result of the learner's motivation and engagement. With this view upon learning the learner is in focus and the role of the teacher is primarily seen as a facilitator, not an instructor. The teacher's role should be to guide the learner helping him or her to ask the right questions in order to create new knowledge that may bridge the aforementioned gap. In the learning process acquiring information is viewed as an integrated activity as opposed to the view of many learners who regard information searching as an isolated activity that is merely result-orientated rather than process-orientated. When we look at information searching processes as integrated in the learning process, there is also an overlap between methods that can be applied in both processes especially at the cognitive level. E.g. identifying information gaps/needs may consist of activities that are similar to identifying the core of the problem to be solved in the learning process. The above provide the basics of an understanding of learning and information searching processes which has implications for the choice of pedagogical methods in the actual meeting with and councelling of learners whether it is a physical or virtual meeting. In the development of our virtual services we aim at establishing a framework that facilitates learner's reflection taking into account their prior experience of learning and information searching processes. In creating e-learning programmes we emphasize that facilitating the user's learning process is the crux of the matter. It is not the developing and applying of multimedia in it self that is interesting - i.e. 'e-' is merely one of the instruments that we can apply as a pedagogical means of achieving motivation and engagement. The conference will touch upon the choice of pedagogical methods in education: Is establishing a reflective environment imperative or is it preferable to establish an environment consisting of a mixture of pedagogical methods ranging from student-initiated reflective activities to teacher-initiated instruction? Are there prerequisites at the cognitive level that need to be developed before application of a reflective environment is viable? The conference will also touch upon matters arising from our ever evolving environments. How do we define the purpose of library service activities? Are information professionals primary goal to provide users with answers, or should they help guiding the learners to ask the right questions in learning activities? Is it essential for users to be able to ask these questions, before they can apply rational methods in the information searching processes? How can we facilitate flexible settings in the library either in a physical, virtual or in a hybrid form?
